It is natural for those of us who value individualism to reject herd customs and behaviors - we really can't help being idiosyncratic and peculiar at times, and we really need to work hard to fit in with the common crowd. And why should we? Who wants to be a sheep? Let your light shine, baby!
Except in a world that more and more resembles one big ant colony, it can be disadvantageous, if not dangerous, to stick out from the crowd. If you are trying to attract a mate, or make a sale, sure showing your uniqueness can be useful, but in a police state, it means you are a potential threat and you become a target for additional attention, but not the kind of attention you were hoping for.
Further, most people are frightened by an individual who acts in ways that are "different". Your fellow citizens increasingly do not believe in live and let live, neither are they tolerant of people who are not like them. These people are not your friends or allies in your mission to be the most exceptional and outstanding individual you can be - they are likely to call the cops on you instead.
So it may be wise to learn how to pretend to be a Normal, particularly when you are in public. Don't worry, you can still let your freak flag fly, practice your spell casting, and continue your experiments with reanimating dead bodies in the privacy of your bedroom/dungeon, wizard tower, or laboratory. For your own safety and the safety of your loved ones however, you might want to tone that down when around the Muggles.
If it helps, think of it as a game - let's see who can put on the best disguise!
