Are you a citizen? But of course you are. But what if I told you that citizenship is a concept that was mostly unknown or unavailable to the vast majority of people in the world until a couple hundred years ago? Citizenship is a good thing, right? Citizens have all sorts of rights, privileges, and protections - look at all the people for example who go through great trials and suffering to come to the United States. They want to become citizens of the greatest nation in the world, right?
No, not really. Nobody knows how many non-citizens live in the US, but it is at least 20 million people, and, it is likely much higher. Many people live their entire lives in the U.S without becoming citizens. Why, if citizenship is such a benefit?
Our masters like to talk about all the benefits of citizenship, including free money and other benefits like housing, food, medical care, education, etc. And of course assuming you want to work, you can get a nice government job if you are a citizen. And let's not forget voting - that's a great privilege!
But our masters giveth, and they taketh away. You also get to "serve" your country in time of war, which is all the time. You get to "serve" on a jury, whether you want to or not. And of course, you get to pay taxes - also whether you want to or not, and you get to pay U.S taxes even if you live somewhere else in the world.
And it looks like you are going to be paying a lot more taxes in the coming years. Maybe citizenship isn't such a benefit - maybe it is serfdom? No wonder more US citizens than ever are not just leaving the country, but renouncing their citizenship - and paying big sums of money to buy their freedom.
Is it worth it? Let's find out.
My aunt does a thing where she works as a nurse at different ports all over the world and lives on a sailboat. She spends most of her time in Belize and Costa Rica. Her husband (who is now deceased) was a police chief who saw what was happening in government and he decided he was over it. That's when they bought the boat. Talking to them really changed my outlook.
