Iran’s government is repressive. That’s the reality. But Washington doesn’t get to dress up military escalation as a humanitarian concern while it’s launching strikes inside Iran, trading missile attacks across the region, and threatening more retaliation. They dress it up, as they historically do, as liberation. But it isn’t liberation at all. It’s escalation with better public relations.
The United States doesn’t even reliably defend the rights of its own people. It tolerates warrantless immigration arrests and deportations, treats protest and recording law enforcement as suspicious behavior, taxes the working class into the poor house, allows insurance companies to deny coverage and approval for life-saving treatments, and expands the surveillance state exponentially every year while politicians lecture the rest of the world about “freedom” and human dignity.
Then comes the usual, predictable sales pitch: Iran must be punished, American “credibility” must be restored, and somehow more bombs are the only solution adults with too much power can come up with. Meanwhile, weapons manufacturers see new contracts, defense contractors see new deployments, pundits see new television appearances, and politicians see new donor opportunities.
The average Iranian won’t profit from this. The average American won’t either. We’ll get the bills, the dead, the blowback, and another round of fear and hype used to justify more war.
The Military Industrial Complex doesn’t care about democracy in Iran any more than Washington cares about civil liberties at home. It cares about enemies, escalation, and invoices. Don’t be deceived.
